McNish Bidding To Earn Audi Success in Sebring “Farewell” Race

Scotland’s Allan McNish is eager to sign off Audi’s participation of a historic sportscar endurance race by scoring his fifth and the German manufacturer’s 11th victory on Saturday (16 March).

Dumfries-born McNish races for a 10th time since making his debut in the Sebring 12 Hours – his first race for Audi in 2000 – co-driving a 2013 specification hybrid-diesel Audi R18 e-tronquattro with Tom Kristensen (DK), who has won at Sebring a record six times, and Lucas di Grassi (BR).

McNish confirmed: “I’m really looking forward to Sebring. It’s always an intense race and I have the chance of maybe another podium or even better a fifth win.

“It’s the toughest and most gruelling race I’ve done – more so than Le Mans because there is no respite. The weather is invariably hot and humid, the high-speed track is very bumpy and with the number of cars on track, I’m lucky if I get a single second to relax on each lap.

“It’s hard on the car, which gets bashed and knocked around, and the driver plus the engineers and mechanics as well – they have really got to be on their toes throughout the 12 hours.”

This year’s Sebring race is likely to be the last for McNish – and Audi – for the foreseeable future. Sebring is no longer in the FIA World Endurance Championship while a change in car regulations in 2014 outlaws Audi’s LMP1 sports-prototype.

“While Sebring marks the start of my 2013 race season for Audi Sport it will unfortunately be the end of an era’” continued Allan. “I’ve contested 50 American Le Mans Series races since it was formed in 1999 but after next year’s merger, Audi’s current sports-prototype will be ineligible to race. So it’s clear that we [Audi Sport] would love the opportunity to be standing again on the top step of the podium.

“There’s always a variety of spectators from the ‘die hard’ race fans, casual fans who come for the atmosphere of the ‘carnival’ and the guys that have seen so many more Sebring’s than I will ever see.

“It really is an impressive sight and one you cannot replicate anywhere else in the world. 150,000 people crammed in to a venue in the middle of Florida, for what can only be described as an intense ‘party’ off the track and a hell of a race on it.

McNish is one of only four drivers to have recorded pole-position, fastest race lap and victory at Sebring (2006) when Audi recorded the first major international race win for a diesel-engined sportscar.

McNish, Kristensen and Capello hold the record Sebring race distance (383 laps/1,417.1miles) and fastest race average speed (117.98mph) from 2009.

An entry of around 40-cars is expected for the ALMS opening race of the 2013 season. Qualifying around the 3.74-mile track is staged on Friday (1815*) with the race getting underway at 1430* on Saturday.

2000: 2nd - 39.111 seconds behind winning Audi (Qualified 2nd).

Puncture at one-quarter distance lost time due to bodywork damage, Capello spun off damp track while brake issues delayed pace in closing stages which marked McNish’s maiden race for Audi.

2004*: 1st (Qualified 2nd, AM).

Trouble-free run from start-to-finish, led final six hours uninterrupted finishing 5-laps clear. First race for McNish after returning to Audi from his three year spell in Formula One.

2005*: 2nd - 6.365 seconds behind winning Audi (Qualified 2nd).

Traded lead with eventual winner throughout.

2006: 1st + Fastest Lap, AM (Qualified 1st, AM).

Started race from pit-lane after heat exchanger problem but McNish went on to score debut win for Audi R10 TDI by four laps.

2007: 4th (Qualified 2nd).

Led majority of opening 5hrs until an electrical issue caused two pit stops costing 30mins. Dropped to seventh but finished fourth, second in LMP1.

2008: 3rd (Qualified 1st, AM).

Traded lead with “sister” Audi but lost one lap when a front suspension component was changed after 7hrs and then a further two laps an hour later when the front brake discs were changed.

2009: 1st (Qualified 2nd).

Debut win for R15 TDI.

2011: 4th (Qualified 4th).

Led several times until Capello was “punted” off the track at one-third distance resulting in a seven-lap pit-stop for repairs.

2012: 1st (Qualified 2nd).

McNish snatched the lead on the opening lap and his Audi went on to lead all but 66 of the 325-laps.
