McNish Records Eighth Sebring Podium Finish After Missing Out On Fifth Victory Following Epic 12 Hour Duel

Scotsman Allan McNish recorded his eighth “rostrum” finish in his 10th appearance in the Sebring 12 Hour sportscar endurance race that finished last night (Saturday 16 March).

Dumfries-born McNish plus co-drivers Tom Kristensen (DK) and Lucas di Grassi (BR), narrowly finished second in their 2013-specification hybrid-diesel Audi R18 e-tronquattro – an agonising 7.679secs behind the “sister” Audi of Oliver Jarvis (GB), Marcel Fässler (CH) and BenoîtTréluyer (F) after an intense, race-long duel.

McNish commented: “It was a fantastic race, a real battle from start to finish over 12 hours. I was personally really pleased with my own performance because I had six very good stints behind the wheel and so am delighted with the way I’ve started the 2013 season.

“Lucas and Tom both raced superbly but unfortunately we lost a little bit of speed in the car halfway through the race. Congratulations to our ‘sister’ car, they did a great job.

“We came to Sebring hoping to put on a good race for the fans on the R18 e-tronquattro’s debut in North America and they certainly got it!”

McNish, denied pole-position by a mere 0.009secs in qualifying, swept into the lead for the first time with 94mins gone, Kristensen – who set the fastest race lap – having shadowed the “sister” Jarvis/Fässler/Tréluyer Audi from the start.

Approaching three-hours, McNish’s one-minute lead turned into a 83secs deficit when the Scotsman was given a stop-go penalty plus 60secs “hold” for avoidable contact with a slower car.

McNish ultimately pitted to di Grassi after a two-hour stint with a 24secs lead and returned to the action with seven hours gone, now placed second 17secs behind the lead Audi.

But after 2hrs 21mins behind the wheel, the Scotsman handed over the car again to di Grassi with a 14.5secs lead.

However the “sister” Audi demoted the McNish/Kristensen/di Grassi car to second place with less than two hours remaining in this epic, no holds barred battle that had raged from the start between the two Audi sportscars.

Kristensen took over with 75mins remaining and after the “sister” car’s penultimate stop, lay 2.683secs behind Tréluyer.

The pair were separated by less than one second with under an hour to run – and at times raced side-by-side – Kristensen ultimately trailing Tréluyer across the finish line by 7.679secs after 364-laps and 1,361.36-miles.

The 61st running of the annual race in Florida is McNish’s last in the foreseeable future due to a change in regulations next year which will outlaw the Audi sports-prototype.

Audi defends its Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in the FIA World Endurance Championship that gets underway at Silverstone (14 April) with McNish bidding for success in the eight-race WEC series.
