McNish Off To Flying Start In World “Crown” Title Quest

Scotsman scores Audi’s fifth win in annual Silverstone race to lift RAC Tourist Trophy

Britain’s Allan McNish got his 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship title aspirations off to a flying start on “home soil” in the season-opening six hour race at Silverstone today (14 April).

Dumfries-born McNish and co-drivers Tom Kristensen (DK) and Loïc Duval (F), swept their hybrid-diesel Audi R18 e-tron quattro to a 3.462secs victory to lift the coveted Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy ahead of the “sister” Audi – the German manufacturer dominating the race almost from start to finish.

The McNish/Kristensen/Duval “factory” Audi averaged 120.17mph throughout the 721-mile, 197-lap race staged in mainly dry but blustery weather conditions marking
the Scotsman’s fourth and Audi’s fifth victory in the annual Silverstone race.

McNish commented: “It was very important to start off the year with big points and for the second consecutive season, we’ve made a good start to the WEC by taking maximum points.

“There’s another seven races but we’re in the best position heading to Belgium early next month.”

The McNish/Duval/Kristensen and Benoît Tréluyer/Marcel Fässler/Andre Lotterer Audi sportscars started third and fifth respectively on the 31-car grid but McNish had powered into the lead after 12mins with Tréluyer quickly making it an Audi 1-2.

Following an 80-minute “stint”, McNish pitted with a 16secs lead over the “sister” Audi but Duval, who had taken over from McNish, was demoted to second place after almost 2½hrs. A full course caution to clear away debris following a light rain shower cancelled out the Frenchman’s lead allowing Fässler to dart ahead at the re-start.

Lotterer led Kristensen by 3secs at mid-distance with McNish re-joining the action with 95mins to run 5secs behind the Tréluyer Audi.

McNish swept back into the lead 10mins later but a shorter, penultimate pit-stop to take on less diesel with less than an hour to run, gave Tréluyer a five second lead over McNish.

But a spin, in avoidance of a slower car at the apex of a corner, with 40mins remaining, saw McNish drop from 3secs to 18secs behind before both Audis pitted for a final time leaving Tréluyer 26secs ahead.

But a determined charge saw McNish, who set a series of fastest race laps, sweep ahead with less than five minutes remaining.

Allan added: “We knew it was going to be a tough race from start to finish, due to the weather and of course the competition from Toyota and also internally at Audi with our two cars going flat out.

“But I believe it surpassed all expectations. The race quickly came down to a fight between the two ‘sister’ Audis.

“I spun avoiding a GT car when lapping it which ‘flat spotted’ my tyres which meant I had to take on new ones.

“It was just maximum attack from then until the end – there was no other option if I wanted to lift the RAC Tourist Trophy.”

The second round of the eight-race WEC is staged at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday 4 May which McNish/Duval/Kristensen will start with a seven-point WEC lead.
