McNish Splashes Closer Towards World Championship Title

Audi Clinches WEC Manufacturer’s title with two races still to run

FIA World Endurance Championship leader Allan McNish will start the penultimate round of the series in Shanghai next month with a crucial 40 plus points lead.

The Briton’s hybrid-diesel Audi R18 e-tron quattro was classified second in today’s (SUN) Six Hours of Fuji after the Japanese “race” ran for a total of just 16-laps all behind the Safety Car and ultimately abandoned after five hours due to inclement weather.

The race was suspended twice when torrential rain made driving conditions too dangerous around the 2.84-mile Japanese track nestling in the foothills of Mount Fuji.

McNish and co-driver Loïc Duval had qualified fourth fastest in dry conditions the previous day and while only the Frenchman drove in today’s “race” McNish, Duval and Tom Kristensen each collected half points awarded by the organisers due to the shortened distance which nevertheless helped Audi earn the WEC Manufacturers’ title for a second consecutive year.

“It was a bizarre situation being on the podium for second place after not driving and no ‘racing’ laps having taken place – something I’ve never previously experienced in my career,” confirmed McNish.

“The organisers awarded half points meaning Tom, Loïc and I extended our series lead by 8¾ points and head to China with a 40¾pt lead which is obviously very good with just two races to go.

“But I will not change my attitude or focus. I go to both races attempting to win.”
The “pole” starting Audi Sport Team Joest R18 e-tron quattro of Marcel Fässler (CH)/André Lotterer (D)/Benoît Tréluyer (F) pitted twice immediately after the second “start” to remove debris from the Audi’s air box leaving the McNish/Kristensen/Duval Audi second behind the Toyota which then inherited the lead and finally victory when organisers decided not to re-start proceedings.

Defending WEC champions Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer were placed fourth in class but only 26th overall earning the crew a mere ¼pt to remain second in the Driver’s title race.

Allan added: “These were incredibly difficult conditions with aquaplaning and visibility was basically zero due to the amount of spray. The race officials had to make some very difficult decisions which were the correct decisions.”

The seventh and penultimate round of the series is staged at Shanghai will be on 9 November with the championship finale in Bahrain on 30 November with a total of 52pts on offer.
